Highly refined and innovative kitchen, one of the best in the region

The Alkimista is a fine dining restaurant that stands in its own category in Szeged. What you get is not just a dinner, but a full culinary journey that rivals the best of Budapest.
If you are the kind of person who is willing to travel far for a dinner, this is the place that is worthy of it. If you just happen to be in town, try to call and pray that you can get in. If you live in Szeged, then you are lucky, because you can come every week.
An outsdanding place, thank you and congratulations!

Alkimista is the only place in Szeged for real fine dining! After knowing it for a couple of years, the quality increased constantly and it is a truly culinary experience each time we go there. We are fine dine lovers, thats why we are regular guests since years.
A cozy and elegant place serving the best food and wines of the city! A must to go for any Szeged visitor or Fine dinning lover.

We've been visiting the Alkimista for about four years now and it's absolutely amazing. It is situated in the very heart of Szeged, very close to all the tourist attractions, but it's an attraction in itself. The restaurant is very tiny, offering space for max 14-16 guests (even less now) at once, so it's ideal if you prefer intimate settings. The Alkimista is famous for its progressive kitchen (among the top8 in Hungary) and offers 7-course degustation menus made of local, seasonal, top quality ingredients. What we like the most is not just the dinners but all the rest they have to offer: we love spending a whole evening in this jewellery box listening to the chef's amazing stories about "the secret life of food", tasting carefully selected wines, eating courses prepared in a form we have never seen before, and being served by this great team. Visiting Alkimista is a whole-evening adventure that you'll remember for long!

My fiancée and I visited 3 times in total, a french themed, a spring themed dinner and one based around craft beers.
While all there were remarkably different experiences, the dinners were masterfully composed and the dishes were superbly stringed together leaving behind a sense of fulfillment.
The many dishes inspired on local, and hungarian cuisine all touch on something, some subconscious memory that leaves the guest almost emotional, and even more experimental dishes seen familiar in other ways. The french influence is felt, and is most welcome, there aren't many restaurants outside Budapest which offer that.
A fair word of warning though: This is no place to "just have dinner" the dishes, and the whole of evening demands and deserves attention, patience and respect.
On a more technical note:
-Punctiality is a must
-Price may seem steep, but value for money is superb
In summary: Extraordinary dining experience in rural Hungary. Do not miss if you are travelling in the area. If you are a really committed it is worth a detour for.

Small place in city center - a small 500 sq feet one room apartment that has been converted into the very small diner. Cozy and elegant place offers a very private dining experience, you feel that you are really the guest. Chef formerly from the famous Olimpia restaurant in Budapest.
The chef understand the concept that ingredients has to be local and very fresh. She buys everything locally, and cooks local cuisine, mostly from the southern plane with some French accent. The result is something between fine dining and bistrot cuisine that is very much missing outside Budapest: a food that is very high end, albeit understandable for most people who wants to eat better. She is also very good in renewing the old fashioned Hungarian meals that are classic, however no longer cooked in most of the families.
I would encourage every restaurant manager in Szeged to follow the principle the chef is doing: cook that is locally available in the region. Use local fishes like catfish instead of bringing moderately fresh seafood from 500 miles.
