Excellent bar. Cheap price. Full of characters that one could only associate with the fab city of budapest.

Whenever we have stayed near the Keleti train station, we have used Derby Bufe as our "local" bar. Some of the same staff have been there since our first visit in 2006, and it is always a pleasure to see them. This is a bar with character, and the locals are indeed "characters" too. Good atmosphere with drinks at good, cheap prices. A good jukebox too!! No food is served - just bar snacks. Great little bar.

We stumbled upon this bar purely due to its location next to our hotel - Golden Park - on our first night in Budapest and at first we weren't sure about it - it is very much a locals' bar, the barmaid only spoke enough English to take our order (which was no problem at all) and there were a few super-drunk people falling out of the door as we arrived at about 10pm, but we stayed for a a while and it as OK.
The turning point was discovering that they had Metallica in the jukebox! Nowhere seems to have a jukebox these days, and even when they did there was never any Metallica...
Closed on Christmas Eve, we went back on Christmas evening again for a 'quick one' which ended up meaning a good couple of hours as we met the tour bus guy from that morning who recognised us from several hours earlier - this turned out to be great as we made friends with a Hungarian guy who was happy to give us a local/insider's perspective on the city rather than the normal tourist view one gets in new places. Through our new friend, we got to know the owner and the bar became our 'local' for the 7 days we were there - each time getting to know and be accepted a little more by the regulars.
Not the best bar in the world, it has to be said, but welcoming, fun and cheap. All in all much better than the two of us sitting alone in any number of other random bars around the city, not interacting with anyone and not learning anything substantial about the city apart from the contents of our Lonely Planet.

Dropped in here, as got in to Budapest late at night, made to feel real Welcome, used this place as our local, every morning and Evening. Gotta love those Peach Snaps :-)
